Alexander Lewis realizes just how bad his afterlife is going to be…
SCENE II (Formatted for easy reading)
(BELLMAN exits. ALEX turns back to the room and stares a moment. He pulls the phone out of his pocket, pushes a few buttons and waits for the ring to come. DANNY can be a V.O.)
DANNY. (Impatient) What the hell you want, kid?
ALEX. Twenty-four hours. (Beat) Ask them to postpone the shoot a day and I’ll owe you my soul, Danny.
DANNY. I can’t believe you’re pullin’ this shit again.
ALEX. You know I wouldn’t ask unless—
DANNY. This got somethin’ to do with Grace?
ALEX. No man, nothin’ like that. I, uh, (Beat) stomach flu. I got the stomach flu.
DANNY. I can’t do it, kid. I can’t hold up a shoot because you drank too much at the Oscars, got it? They’re already behind schedule-- now get your ass to the airport. Don’t think, just go.
ALEX. (Beat) Danny…
DANNY. This is why you get paid the big bucks. (Beat) What’d I tell ya? We don’t pass on the big ones and this, this is a big one. Ten mil, cut of the box, two sequels ain’t no joke. Was I right? Would I ever steer ya wrong? That loser friend of yours gonna be there too? On time for a change?
ALEX. Yeeeeap, (Beat) we’re on our way to the airport now.
DANNY. A miracle. Good thing I’m already sittin’ down. Now, we cool?
ALEX. Sure thing, boss.
DANNY. Sleep it off on the plane, huh?
ALEX. K.
DANNY. Call me when ya get there.
ALEX. You’re cute when you worry.
DANNY. Yeah, yeah. ‘Night.
(ALEX Hangs up. He paces the living room. Walks back to the door of the bedroom and slowly opens it. He looks at GRACIE)
ALEX. (Whispering) Gracie, I.. (Beat) See ya in June, huh?
(ALEX reaches in his pocket and pulls out a bottle of pills. He takes a few out and throws them back. He puts his sunglasses on and exits. Gracie sits up. Curtain. Sound of jets firing up, lights flicker, and sound of an airplane taking off.)
